Bravo TV host Andy Cohen called out the Florida Senate for passing the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill and sent a message to Republican politicians that they weren’t “going to erase” gay people with their “homophobic” bill.

“I want to address some personally disturbing news coming out of Florida,” Cohen shared Tuesday in a clip he posted on Instagram from his show “Watch What Happens Live.”

“The so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill,’ which bans teachers up to third grade from discussing sexual orientation or gender identity in their curriculum passed the state Senate today,” he added. “Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is expected to sign it into law.”

“First to Florida Republicans, you’re pretending to solve a problem that doesn’t exist,” Cohen continued.  “There is not a mass conspiracy of kindergarten teachers who are plotting to teach children to be gay. This is one big dog whistle. You’re scaring people into spewing hate and discrimination at the LGBTQ community.”

The TV host admitted the actual bill HB 1557 doesn’t actually use the words “don’t say gay” in it, but he said he’s concerned about the “deliberately vague language” he said “leaves room for it to be interpreted that way.”

Cohen then asked if it would be “considered illegal” if his son went to school and talked about “his gay dad during class and the teacher engaged” according to the new “vague, hateful law.”

He also blasted Senator Ileana Garcia (R-FL), who he claimed said on the state’s Senate floor that “being gay is not a permanent thing. LGBT is not a permanent thing.”

“Sweetie with all due respect, it’s permanent,” Cohen said, pointing back at himself. “Trust me.”

“I thought the whole point of sending our kids to school was to educate them and prepare them for the real world,” he added. “Well, newsflash, the real world has gay people in it. It has people of all different gender identities. You can draft all the homophobic and transphobic bills you want, you’re not going to erase us. I just wonder how many children and families need to suffer before our politicians figure that out.”

Florida’s HB 1557, does not use the word “gay” anywhere in the bill. It is critics of the bill that have labeled it the “Don’t Say Gay Bill.”

HB 1557 reinforces the “fundamental right of parents to make decisions regarding the upbringing and control of their children,” as previously reported.

“A school district may not adopt procedures or student support forms that prohibit school district personnel from notifying a parent about his or her student’s mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being, or a change in related services or monitoring, or that encourage or have the effect of encouraging a student to withhold from a parent such information,” the legislation reads.

“School district personnel may not discourage or prohibit parental notification of and involvement in critical decisions affecting a student’s mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being,” it added.
