After a long standoff, officials announced that law enforcement had shot and killed the armed suspect Thursday who attempted to break into the FBI headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Ricky Shiffer.

The New York Times reports Lt. Nathan Dennis of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said law enforcement officers tried negotiating with the suspect before attempting to take him into custody with “less-than-lethal tactics.”

However, the suspect raised his gun, prompting officers to fatally shoot him.

Schiffer reportedly flashed an AR-15-style rifle and fired a nail gun into the FBI building Thursday morning.

He would later flee the scene, causing multiple law enforcement agencies to engage in pursuit.

Authorities set up closures on Interstate 71 and State Route 73 as the suspect apparently headed toward the state capital of Columbus.

“At approximately 9 AM this morning an armed subject attempted to breach the Visitor Screening Facility at #FBI Cincinnati,” the local FBI office shared on Twitter. “After an alarm and a response by FBI special agents, the subject fled north onto Interstate 71.”

The incident at FBI headquarters was linked a short time later to a lockdown in nearby Clinton County, where residents were advised to stay inside and lock their doors.
