President Joe Biden’s doctor on Wednesday released the results of the president’s colonoscopy.

Biden’s colonoscopy discovered a 3-millimeter polyp, which the president had removed, according to a memo from Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who serves as Physician to the President.

“The following is released with permission of the patient,” O’Connor wrote in his memo.

“As previously reported in my 19 November 2021 memorandum. President Biden had a benign appearing 3 mm polyp removed from his ascending colon. The specimen was sent for histologic examination,” the president’s physician wrote.

The doctor continued, “The excised specimen has been identified as a tubular adenoma. This is similar to the polyp which he had removed in 2008. A tubular adenoma is a benign, slow-growing, but thought to be potentially pre-cancerous lesion for which no further action is required at this time. Routine surveillance is recommended for this finding. Typically, repeat colonoscopy in 7 to 10 years is recommended.”

O’Connor also teaches as a professor at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Last Friday, Biden underwent his annual physical as well as a routine colonoscopy.

Because Biden had to receive anesthesia for the colonoscopy, Vice President Kamala Harris briefly assumed presidential powers during that period. It was the first time a woman has held presidential power in U.S. history.

The topic of Biden’s health has been a constant in the news cycle since during his presidential campaign.

On Friday, the day of Biden’s physical, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki several questions about Biden’s health, including whether Biden’s doctor would provide an update on the president’s health.

“Can you explain the timing of the physical today? What was behind it? Did the fact that the President is turning 79 years old tomorrow have anything to do with the timing? Did he want to have that before his birthday?” NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked Psaki.

Psaki and Welker went back and forth a few times, Psaki eventually asking, “What’s the root of your question, just to make sure I answer it?”

“Just when was it planned? When did he first schedule the physical? We — just because he had such a full day yesterday,” Welker responded, noting, “And he had a colonoscopy today.”

Psaki responded in part that “that is the nature of being president.”

“Is there any discussion about having a doctor brief us, given that he is the oldest sitting Commander-in-Chief?” Welker asked.

“We will be releasing a comprehensive summary — a written summary — that will have details from the doctor and other experts who were consulted — medical experts who were consulted — that you’ll receive later today. So that, I think, is what our intention is,” Psaki responded.

O’Connor later released a letter summarizing the results of Biden’s physical.

“President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 78-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the president, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief,” the doctor wrote.
