President Joe Biden told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Friday that Americans should consider getting vaccinated against COVID-19 as “patriotic.”
Speaking via video call, Biden said the reason for his dismal approval ratings was because Americans had worries about inflation, the supply chain crisis, gas prices, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“People are worried and they’re worried about whether or not, you know, they have a brother or sister, uncle or aunt who has gotten COVID and they don’t know what to do about it,” Biden told Fallon. “There’s a lot of anxiety and my job is to be straightforward, shoot from the shoulder, let people know exactly what the truth is, and lay out how I’m going to try to make life better for them.”
Fallon then asked Biden what his message was to solve the pandemic.
“The COVID problem, I don’t know what else to do and how else to tell people to get the vaccine,” Fallon lamented. “At this point, just, I think people are going to do what they will, I guess, I don’t know what to say, but is it the youth that we have to — hope the kids get us out of this? Because, I mean, I got vaccinated, I got boosted, I got — whatever you want.”
“If you want me to wear red pants, I’ll wear red pants. I want this thing to go away,” Fallon added.
“Well, I think what I’d do is have more people listen to your song. I think that’ll get ‘em moving,” Biden said, referring to Fallon’s pandemic-themed Christmas song he released with Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion. Fallon then brought up a tweet from the official presidential Twitter account endorsing the song and announcing the president’s appearance.

“You said in another comment, ‘The message is very important: get your booster,’” Fallon continued.
“Well, it is, it’s really important, Jimmy,” Biden acknowledged. “Look, we’re so far ahead of the rest of the world in terms of the science, the technology to produce the vaccines. And now we’ve found out that if you have your two shots from Moderna or from Pfizer, or the one shot from [Johnson & Johnson], what happens is, this booster shot not only brings the levels back up of immunity, I mean, to deal with the fighting off the virus, any of the viruses, but it brings it up exponentially. So, if you wanna be sure you’re gonna be okay — and the other good news, Jimmy, is that we now have 5, 6, and 7-year-olds are able to be vaccinated, as well as teenagers. And so we’re moving. We’re moving.”
“Now I, I, I don’t — the politicization of this,” Biden continued. “Making it become a political statement if you get the shot, and somehow — I don’t know, anyway-” Biden stopped himself short.
“Here’s the deal, Jimmy. The bottom line is that the way to avoid this virus is to get two shots and then get the booster shot. It’s available. We have the medicines available. It will make a gigantic difference. And even if you don’t care so much about yourself, think about your kid, your brother, your sister, your coworker.”
“And this stuff about ‘Biden’s mandate, and these things happening, it’s un-American,’ look at it this way, it’s patriotic to get this done,” Biden concluded.
“Not a joke. It’s patriotic to get it done.”
Biden also told Fallon how the ‘Build Back Better‘ package is “paid for.” He also said that he “doesn’t pay attention” to approval ratings polls, and blamed the Republican Party for stalling his agenda and making it harder for Republicans and Democrats to get along.
