Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referred to the nation’s truck convoy headed to Ottawa as a “fringe minority” as up to a half-million people are reportedly headed toward the nation’s capital in opposition to the nation’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for truck drivers.

Trudeau shared the comments in response to a reporter’s question on the Truckers for Freedom convoy.

“The small, fringe minority of people who are on their way to Ottawa, who are holding unacceptable views that they are expressing, do not represent the views of Canadians who have been there for each other, who know that following the science and stepping up to protect each other is the best way to continue to ensure our freedoms, our rights, our values as a country,” Trudeau said.

As Trudeau commented on the “fringe minority,” the Truckers for Freedom convoy became the longest convoy in the world as of a variety of reports on Wednesday.

Some have said the number of people involved in the convoy is now estimated at 500,000 people and 50,000 trucks.

Thousands of supporters have lined the roadways of Canada in support of the effort. Miles of sounding horns and shouts of support have sprung up across the nation.

The growing convoy continues to build momentum as truckers head toward the nation’s capital of Ottawa.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we have 150,000 trucks and truckers and a total of 700,000 people by the time we hit Ottawa,” Northern BC organizer Art Meise of Prince George told Kelowna Now.

Former NHL player and two-time Olympic gold medalist Theo Fleury addressed Trudeau’s response in an interview on “The Ingraham Angle” on Wednesday.

“Right now in Canada, we have one of the biggest revolutions happening….Right now there’s 50,000 truckers and about 1.4 million people headed to the parliament in Ottawa. And they’re going to stay there until Trudeau resigns,” Fluery said.

The truck convoy has been filled with a variety of controversies, including a massive GoFundMe effort that has been put on hold by the fundraising platform. The Daily Wire reported:

GoFundMe has blocked access to over $4.5 million raised by a Canadian trucker “Freedom Convoy” protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

The fundraising campaign had received donations from more than 60,000 donors as of Tuesday.

“We require that fundraisers be transparent about the flow of funds and have a clear plan for how those funds will be spent. In this case, we are in touch with the organizer to verify that information,” Rachel Hollis, a GoFundMe spokeswoman, said in an email, according to the Toronto Star.

“Funds will be safely held until the organizer is able to provide the documentation to our team about how funds will be properly distributed,” the report added.

Many Canadian truck drivers are participating due to a January 15 deadline that forces unvaccinated drivers to observe a two-week quarantine and COVID-19 test before crossing into Canada from the U.S.

The U.S. also implemented new restrictions starting January 22 that will require non-U.S. individuals entering the nation at the Canadian border to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
