Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas suggested on Friday that the U.S. is “undermining” its institutions, citing the recent leak of a draft opinion regarding Roe v. Wade as an example.

Thomas, 73, made the remarks during the Old Parkland Conference for black conservatives in Dallas, Texas, just two weeks after the draft opinion was leaked suggesting the Supreme Court is preparing to overturn Roe.

“I do think that what happened at the court is tremendously bad,” Thomas said, referring to the leaked draft. “I wonder how long we’re going to have these institutions at the rate we’re undermining them and then I wonder when they’re gone or destabilized what we will have as a country and I don’t think the prospects are good if we continue to lose them.”

Thomas said the unprecedented leak has made the justices suspicious of those around them, Politico reported.

“When you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I’m in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder,” Thomas said. “It’s kind of like infidelity that you can explain it, but you can’t undo it.”

Thomas, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush and is the longest serving current justice, told the audience that until the draft opinion was leaked, no one would even fathom such a incident.

“If someone said that one line of one opinion would be leaked by anyone … you would say: ‘That’s impossible. No one would ever do that,’” he said. “That was verboten. It was beyond anyone’s understanding or at least anyone’s imagination.”

Thomas, according to Politico, seemed to suggest that the leak may have come from a law clerk or even another justice.

“Anybody who would, for example, have an attitude to leak documents, that is your general attitude, that is your future on the bench,” the justice said.

The draft leak, in which Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito wrote that Roe “was egregiously wrong from the start,” has sparked left-wing protests across the country, with claims that abortion would become illegal in the U.S. if Roe were overturned. In fact, overturning Roe would turn the issue of abortion back to individual states to make laws based on what the people want.

Polling consistently shows that Americans largely disapprove of abortion beyond the first trimester, yet Democrats continue to refuse to put any limits on abortion, even up to the minute of birth.

It appears, however, that left-wing messaging on abortion is failing, with the Pro-Choice Caucus providing new messaging materials to House Democrats, The Daily Wire previously reported.

The new messaging suggests Democrats say “decision” instead of “choice,” “unwanted pregnancy” instead of “unexpected pregnancy,” and to refer to those who object to abortion as saying they are advocating for “refusal of care” or “denial of care.

The outrage from the Left may have prompted the Supreme Court to release its Roe decision early, possibly even as early as Monday.
