After NBC announced on April 24 that Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, would co-host Saturday’s episode of Saturday Night Live, social media was alight with both excitement and some levels of controversy.

In traditional fashion, Musk delivered the host’s monologue in front of a live studio audience.

“It’s an honor to be hosting Saturday Night Live. I mean that,” Musk said. “Sometimes after I say something, I have to say, ‘I mean that,’ so people really know that I mean it,” Musk added, poking fun at his “robotic” tone.

Musk delivered several jokes regarding his Twitter habits, smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast, and the spelling of his son’s name, “X Æ A-12,” saying, “It’s pronounced cat running across keyboard.”

Following the episode’s “Mothers’ Day” theme, Musk was also joined on stage by his mother, Maye.

“I’m excited for my mother’s day gift. I just hope it’s not dogecoin,” Musk’s mother said. “It is,” Musk responded. “It sure is.”

During his monologue, Musk also responded to those who criticize his eccentricity, particularly on social media.

“To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say, I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship,” Musk commented. “Did you also think I was going to be a chill, normal dude?”

Musk also stated that he was making history as the first person with Asperger’s syndrome to host the comedy show.

“I’m actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger’s to host ‘Saturday Night Live,’” Musk said. He then joked, “The first to admit it.”

When it was announced that Musk would host “Saturday Night Live,” several cast members and writers responded negatively.

“The news of Musk hosting apparently triggered the cast; Bowen Yang blurted, ‘What the f *** does this even mean,’ in an Instagram Story post. Aidy Bryant reacted by reposting a tweet by Sen. Bernie Sanders that called it a ‘moral obscenity’ that ‘the 50 wealthiest people in America today own more wealth than the bottom half of our people,’” reported The Daily Wire, adding that “SNL writer Andrew Dismukes posted on Instagram: ‘Only CEO I want to do a sketch with is Cher-E Oteri.’”

However, “Michael Che, actor and co-anchor of ‘Weekend Update’ on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ discussed business magnate and multi-billionaire Elon Musk’s controversial” appearance, defending Musk’s selection.

“Che appeared virtually on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ on Wednesday and discussed the episode. Che joked, ‘Well, I was all on board for it till I found out that, like, did you know he’s rich? … Now I’m, like, against it,’” reported The Daily Wire.

“I wish they would’ve told me that before,” the co-anchor joked, before he added, “It’s going to be interesting … It’s cool that people care about who’s on the show, you know? I think, like, that’s what makes it kind of cool.”
