New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that the man being sought by police in connection to Tuesday’s subway shooting is now a “suspect,” rather than a “person of interest.”
Frank R. James, 62, was named by the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a person of interest on Tuesday afternoon, The Daily Wire reported. On Wednesday morning, Adams told Bloomberg Television that James was now considered a suspect.
“Yes he is, he is a suspect, based on the briefing from my law enforcement officials,” Adams said. “He has now been upgraded to a suspect.”
The outlet also reported that some of James’ social media posts mentioned Adams, prompting the NYPD to increase security around the Mayor, who is currently isolating after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The Daily Wire does not publish the names or photographs of mass shooters or other mass killers. When suspects are still at large, however, The Daily Wire might choose to publish details about suspects, including names and images, if doing so can aid the efforts of law enforcement.

According to Newsweek, James “was previously known to the FBI.”
“A federal law enforcement source told Newsweek that a suspect in Tuesday morning’s Brooklyn subway attack was previously known to the FBI and was entered into the Guardian lead system in New Mexico, though he was cleared after multiple interviews in 2019,” the outlet reported. “The NYPD has officially released the name and picture of a 62-year-old man named [the person of interest], identifying him as a person of interest and seeking information regarding his whereabouts from the public. It was unclear, however, if [the person of interest] was suspected of being the perpetrator.”
CBS News reported that the suspect rented a U-Haul van that was found abandoned in Brooklyn following the shooting. He reportedly put on a gas mask while riding the subway and released two smoke canisters before firing 33 shots, wounding 10 people. Another 19 were injured while fleeing from the smoke-filled train car, Bloomberg reported.
“The incident isn’t being investigated as an act of terrorism but the police department isn’t ruling it out, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said earlier. A motive isn’t yet known and five people remain in critical condition. There are no known explosive devices on the subway, and children at five nearby schools who were sheltered in place until dismissal have fully evacuated,” the outlet noted.
The Daily Wire reported Tuesday evening that social media posts from James showed leftist, racist rants:
Heavy.com, a fact-finding website, identified a Facebook page allegedly belonging to the person of interest which contained numerous posts that talked about shooting people and expressed other extreme views, including “black nationalism.”
Andy Ngo, Editor-at-large for The Post Millennial, tweeted out screenshots from the Facebook account that showed posts that promoted the Black Liberation Army, Black Lives Matter, a photo of the man who murdered five police officers in Dallas in 2016, a photo calling to “kill all the whiteys,” posts quoting communist Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, posts expressing support for shooting people, and posts demonizing former President Donald Trump.
YouTube videos allegedly uploaded by the person of interest also showed extreme views, including one where he allegedly called 9/11 “the most beautiful day, probably in the history of this fucking world.”
The person of interest also allegedly ranted in the videos about white people, saying “the vast majority of people, white mother******* are racist.”
