A delivery driver’s mistake resulted in the National Hockey League’s championship trophy — the Stanley Cup — being delivered to the wrong house on Monday.
The cup traditionally spends a day with each player on the championship team and was supposed to be en route to the home of Colorado Avalanche team captain Gabriel Landeskog, following their game 6 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday — but the delivery driver got the house number wrong and pulled into a neighbor’s driveway instead.
The Stanley Cup made an “unscheduled stop,” according to Denver NBC affiliate 9News, at the home of Dmitri Rudenko and his husband, Kit Karbler — who live in the same neighborhood as Landeskog and were ultimately able to get the driver pointed in the right direction.
“I was the first one who saw the car being parked in our driveway. I saw the car backing up,” Rudenko said, adding, “The person opens the trunk and I saw the case and I recognized it, because I watched the final games. I jokingly said, ‘Is that the Stanley Cup?’ And he says, ‘Yes!’”
The “keepers of the Stanley Cup” informed the couple that they were looking for Landeskog’s house, at which point Rudenko and Karbler understood the confusion: their address apparently differs from the Avalanche captain’s by only one number — and a tree blocks the view of one the house numbers as well.
“They’re only one digit off. Because of that one digit, it was fortuitous for us!” Karbler remarked, adding that the keepers of the Cup had been gracious enough to allow them to enjoy the experience, however brief. “They were gentlemen, completely. They were eager to share the experience of the Cup. I had no idea that I would find it so fascinating, myself.”
“I was just so happy to have the Stanley Cup in our driveway,” Karbler continued. “It made our day, and it’s something that we’ll be able to talk about and laugh about for a long time.”
Since arriving at its correct destination, the Stanley Cup has made several public appearances as well.

It was also a prominent feature at a Denver parade celebrating the victory — the first Stanley cup win for the Avalanche in over two decades.
