Rapper and singer Cardi B raised a few eyebrows on Sunday when she tweeted about a possible economic recession — and wondered when the experts were going to announce that one was already on the horizon.
“When y’all think they going to announce that we going into a recession?” she asked.

Some were quick to point out that the typical definition of a recession meant at least two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth — according to the Cambridge dictionary, a recession is “a period, usually at least six months, of low economic activity, when investments lose value, businesses fail, and unemployment rises.”
“When we have two consecutive quarters of NEGATIVE GDP growth. That’s what a recession is. There was a recession under Donald Trump in 2020, both [sic] folks ignored it because of COVID,” @reesetheone1 tweeted.

But most just responded to Cardi B’s assessment with their own hot takes.
“Even Cardi misses Trumponomics,” @Chingobling tweeted in response.
“So the person who wrote ‘WAP’ is more informed than the United States government. Lol,” Colin Gladman added.
@AMC_apee noted, “F****in Cardi B is ahead of the FED.”
“We already know, sis,” @fullcourtPUMPS tweeted.
Matt’s Idea Shop offered a possible alternate meaning for the acronym in Cardi B’s song title, “WAP.” He argued that now it “stands for Weak A** President.”

Other responses included:
- @CryptoWendyO: “The fact that Cardi B is more with it then 90% of public servants is absolute proof we are living in a period where they are maki a mockery of us.”
- @jeffontheright: “I’m not sure. But I suspect that they, along with folks like myself, are waiting for Taylor Swift’s assessment of America’s economic situation. There is no way they will make such an announcement without seeing what she has to say about it first. I certainly wouldn’t.”
- @sandyleevincent: “Cardi B supported Biden & I remember @RealCandaceO warning her. Candace was right.”
- @litcapital: “Girllll you’re too late.”
- @valuestockgeek: “There was a ferocious debate in 2001 about whether we were going to have a recession. We were already in one. By the time it was noticed, the recession was already over. You would think that the end of the recession would be great for the market – but the market kept dropping.”
