Mark Zuckerberg’s shocking admission Thursday that Facebook squelched the Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 election at the behest of the FBI adds to the growing pile of evidence that the bureau may have affected the race by muting an explosive bombshell.
Zuckerberg told podcast king Joe Rogan that the FBI, which by then had been in possession of the laptop for nearly a year, contacted top Facebook officials weeks before the election to warn them that a major dump of Russian disinformation was coming. When the New York Post broke the story, Twitter kicked the news site off its platform, and Facebook, Zuckerberg said, downranked the story for over a week to dampen its impact.
“We just kind of thought, hey, look, if the FBI, which I still view as a legitimate institution in this country, it’s like very professional law enforcement, they come to us and tell us that we need to be on guard about something, then I want to take that seriously,” Zuckerberg told Rogan.

The revelation came on the heels of Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WS) disclosing that multiple whistleblowers from inside the FBI told him they were barred by their superiors from investigating the laptop. Photos, videos, emails, and text messages on the abandoned laptop, which were also ignored by legacy news outlets, paint the president’s son as a drug-addled, venal degenerate and raise troubling questions about President Joe Biden’s own role in his son’s corrupt dealings.
Zuckerberg’s disclosure indicates the bureau was apparently active on at least two fronts in shutting down a story that could have changed the course of the election. Legacy news organizations including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CNN initially dismissed the story as Russian disinformation — as did Biden — but have since acknowledged the laptop’s authenticity.
“The FBI rigged the 2020 election,” tweeted conservative commentator Mollie Hemingway, after Zuckerberg’s disclosure.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said Zuckerberg’s admission adds to a growing list of evidence of the bureau’s meddling in elections on behalf of Democrats.
“So the FBI preemptively warned Facebook off Hunter Biden laptop reporting,” Hawley tweeted. “This same agency effectively laundered Russian disinfo in the 2016 election in the form of Steele dossier. And later lied to a court to get wiretaps.”
The laptop, which Hunter Biden abandoned at a Wilmington, Delaware, computer repair shop, is believed to have been in the possession of the FBI since late 2019, more than a year before the election. It contains photos of Hunter Biden naked and smoking crack, unseemly discussions about his family, and sexual activities, and references to the role of the “Big Guy” in corrupt dealings with foreign entities. The “Big Guy” has been named by former Hunter Biden associate Tony Bobulinski as Joe Biden.
FBI Director Christopher Wray told lawmakers earlier this month that he could not comment on what, if anything, the bureau is doing regarding the laptop. But he said he found reports that the bureau refused to pursue a laptop investigation ahead of the election “deeply troubling.”
Johnson called on Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael Horowitz to investigate why the bureau, which is part of the DOJ, has apparently refused to investigate the laptop.
