The Alabama prison official responsible for helping inmate Casey White escape and leading law enforcement on a manhunt died in a hospital Monday evening after shooting herself.
Vicky White, along with Casey White, were captured in Evansville, Indiana, Monday when the car they were driving reportedly crashed during a pursuit.
“She was hospitalized earlier with self-inflicted gunshot wounds after being taken into custody following a car chase in Evansville, Indiana, US Marshals previously told CNN. Her wounds were ‘very serious,’ [Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding] said,” according to CNN.
As The Daily Wire previously reported, the escape plan was “well thought out,” and the pair were thought to be armed with an AR-15, handguns, and a shotgun. Casey White was in prison after confessing to fatally stabbing a woman in 2015.
According to CNN, law enforcement officers saw Vicky White leaving a hotel with a wig on. She then got into a Cadillac with Casey White, and the officers pursued.
“Authorities continued to watch the pair until a vehicle pursuit began, ending when a US Marshals task force member drove a vehicle into the Cadillac Vicky White was driving. The car wrecked and rolled over, [U.S. Marshal Matt Keely] said,” CNN reported.
Casey White was removed from the car, but Vicky White was trapped inside with a gunshot wound to her head, according to Keely.
Officers on the scene said Casey White told them, “Ya’ll help my wife, she shot herself in the head and I didn’t do it.” However, the two are not married.
The inmate and former prison official escaped on April 29 from an Alabama prison after Vicky White claimed to be escorting Casey White to a mental health evaluation. Vicky White reportedly sold her house for $95,550 when the market value for the house was around $235,000. She then withdrew $90,000 from multiple banks before the pair fled, according to ABC News.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said that before the escape, Vicky White was “an exemplary employee.” She had worked for the department for 17 years. The day she and Casey White escaped was reportedly her last day after submitting retirement papers.
