House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) on Sunday slammed the Republican Party for contemplating removing GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) from her leadership position. According to Clyburn, the discussion taking place within the Republican Party is evidence of “cancel culture.”
“I don’t agree with Liz [Cheney] on much politically but, you know, that’s how we grow as a country. This whole thing that everybody ought to march in lockstep, that is what leads people to destruction. People ought to have a diversity of thought. Diversity is very, very important,” Clyburn told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “You want to limit it to gender and sometimes your race, it is also about thought. And I want to see a strong Republican Party.”
According to the majority whip, his parents were Republicans, which is why he wants to see a thriving GOP.
“This party, Republican Party today, is showing so much dishonor to the people who made it possible, the people who [inaudible] from Abraham Lincoln kept this party alive on the basis of anti-slavery, which, itself, was a big lie,” Clyburn said. “And now, they’re perpetuating it.”
“Now they talk a lot about ‘cancel culture,’ this is the classic cancel culture,” he said, referring to talks about Cheney being removed from GOP leadership. “They are perpetrating that which they argue they are against.”

According to Clyburn, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is contributing to the GOP’s demise.
“I think the Republicans are going to remember that it was Mitch McConnell who told them that his number one priority was to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president,” he explained, saying Obama had a “successful” two terms as president. “I think that they’re going to get the same thing here. Mitch McConnell has some personal animus toward Democrats that ought not be. We are ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’ Let’s operate like that.”

Former Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel also slammed the Republican Party for wanting to remove Cheney from her leadership position, The Daily Wire reported.
“That’s conservative,” Emanuel explained. “This is a reactionary party built on both resentment and race. There’s [where] the party’s going.”
“Second, the other piece of this is, you talk about an agenda. In 2020, there was no platform. There [was] no agenda. It’s about Donald Trump,” the former mayor said. “You know, parties exist for two reasons: set out policy principles. They didn’t have that in 2020. They still don’t have that. Number two, to win elections. It took 90 years to find a president that could both lose the White House, the House, and the Senate, and Donald Trump did that.”
According to The Daily Wire, Cheney seems likely to be stripped of her leadership role sometime soon, and even as early as next week.
“It’s all but certain that as early as next week House Republicans will strip Rep. Liz Cheney of her number-three GOP leadership position — but Cheney faces another major headache back home in Wyoming, as Republicans are plotting to oust her as the state’s lone representative in Congress when she’s up for re-election next year,” Fox News reported.
Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been favored to take Cheney’s position as the number three Republican. She has received a number of endorsements, including from former President Trump himself.
