One police officer was killed and two others wounded following an incident in which the officers were responding to a “domestic disturbance” in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on Thursday.
Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello announced the news at a news conference, though the names of the officers involved and the suspect have not yet been released.
“Police went to a home in the city at about 3:30 p.m. for the disturbance call. Nearly an hour later gunfire broke out and officers radioed they were hit, Capello said at a brief news conference,” the Associated Press reported.
Following the shooting, the three officers were rushed to the hospital where one, while in critical condition, has been stabilized and another was stable. It was announced that one of three officers taken to the hospital had died.
One local resident told the AP that he witnessed “cop car after cop car flying down the street” before he “heard something and weren’t sure what it was and the street filled up with cops and ambulance in a matter of 15 min.”
Lebanon Police Chief Todd Breiner said that the subject of the incident had also been killed. The name of the suspect has not been released yet, but it is known he was a 34-year old Lebanon resident.
As one can imagine, it’s clearly a traumatic event,” Breiner noted. “Our guys are strong, but we’re human and we have families.”
Capello added that the situation was “an extremely difficult moment for everyone.”
Just last week, two other Pennsylvania police officers were killed after a drunk driver allegedly rammed into their vehicle just a short time after they had released the alleged driver to go respond to another situation.
State troopers Martin F. Mack III, 33, and Branden T. Sisca, 29, had pulled over 21-year old Jayana Tanae Webb because they suspected her of driving under the influence. Before they could make any further moves, they left the scene to go respond to a pedestrian who was walking along the side of the highway.
Webb then allegedly rammed her vehicle into the police officers and the pedestrian, and all three were killed. She was subsequently charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, DUI, and other charges.
“The impact of the crash knocked both troopers into the northbound lanes and ripped both driver’s side doors off of their SUV,” Fox 29 reported. “Webb’s vehicle later came to a stop on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes and she remained at the scene prior to being taken into custody.”
A reporter for the outlet added that, “Law enforcement sources told FOX 29 that a 21-year-old driver had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit.”
