When will the COVID-19 pandemic be over?
For more than a quarter of Americans surveyed, it’s already finished.
In a nationwide poll conducted May 14-16 of more than 1,500 people by the Convention of States Action and The Trafalgar Group, respondents were asked: “When will you personally consider the COVID-19 pandemic over and go about life as usual?”
More than a quarter (25.7%) agreed with the answer that “I believe it was serious, but it’s already over.” Another 26.4% said they’ll believe the COVID-19 pandemic is over when the federal government and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tell them so. Nearly a fifth (19.6%) said the pandemic will be over “when everyone has the opportunity to take the vaccine.” And 11.1% said they never took the virus seriously.
Pollsters also found that 42.2% of those surveyed are losing confidence in Dr. Anthony Fauci. Another 31.1% said it had “decreased significantly” while 11.1% said it had “decreased.” Still, 22.1% said their confidence had increased, while another 26.1% said it was unchanged.
“Since the beginning, Dr. Anthony Fauci has served as the face of, and has set the tone for, Washington’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mark Meckler, president of the convention, a nonprofit that seeks to place checks on federal power, according to The Washington Times. “His numerous contradictions, admitted lies, and opinion-driven directives rather than science-driven guidance has impacted the way voters view him and the federal government’s response overall.”
Fauci has had some evolving views on COVID-19. Back in March 2020, Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, declared, “There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask.”
“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” the doctor said on CBS News.
This past February, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on former President Trump’s White House Coronavirus Task Force and is now President Biden’s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, said that wearing two masks is likely more effective than wearing one.
“If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on it, just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,” Fauci told NBC News.
In an interview earlier this month, PolitiFact’s Katie Sanders asked Fauci: “There’s a lot of cloudiness around the origins of COVID-19 still, so I wanted to ask, are you still confident that it developed naturally?”
“No actually,” Fauci said, “I am not convinced about that, I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened.”
“Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out. So, you know, that’s the reason why I said I’m perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus,” Fauci added.
But a year ago, Fauci said: “If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated. Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species.”
“If you accept the premise, which is very strongly supported by scientific evidence, that it was not deliberately mutated and deliberately changed, and you say, if it was in the wild and evolving, the likelihood it jumped species naturally, someone will say, ‘Well, maybe somebody took it from the wild, put it in the lab, and then it escaped from the lab.’ But that means it was in the wild to begin with!” said Fauci.
