New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is slamming Texas for sending busloads of illegal aliens to the Big Apple, claiming that the city is struggling to handle the influx of individuals.
Sunday morning, Adams met the second busload of migrants arriving from the Lone Star State. The Democratic mayor — who ran for election with a promise to keep New York a “sanctuary city” — blasted Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) for transporting the immigrants across the country to his city.
“This is horrific when you think about what [Abbott] is doing,” Adams said during a press conference. “New York is a city that has always represented democratic values. Showing our values. That’s what we’re doing today.”
“It is unimaginable what the governor of Texas has done,” he claimed. “When you think about this country, a country that has always been open to those who are fleeing persecution and other intolerable conditions.”
“We’ve always welcomed that. And this governor is not doing that in Texas,” he added. “But we are going to set the right message and the right tone of being here for these families.”
For his part, Abbott has claimed that “New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city.”
“I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” Abbott said.
The Abbott administration has maintained it has only sent two buses to New York City. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has also sent buses and planes of illegal aliens around the country while releasing more than one million into the country.
New York’s immigrant affairs commissioner, Manuel Castro, has told reporters that the city cannot handle the thousands of individuals and needs assistance from federal authorities.
“Our budgets are impacted because no one plans for [4,000] or [5,000] or 6,000 or even more people to arrive, so they need a shelter,” Castro told Gothamist. “And so of course, that’s the assistance we are seeking the federal government to step in.”
Castro also said that Texas is not giving any warning as to when the buses will arrive.
“Frankly, they’re not communicating, coordinating at all,” Castro told the New York City-based outlet. “This is meant to be disruptive, and that’s unfortunate. Because we’re talking about people’s lives.”
Adams also made similar allegations in his Sunday morning press conference.
“They’re not letting us know when the buses are leaving. They’re not letting us know what are the needs of the people on the bus,” Adams remarked. “They are not giving us any information, so we’re unable to really provide the service to people en route.”
The potential 2024 presidential candidate also accused Texas officials of sending some illegal aliens to New York City against their will.
“We’re finding that some of the families are on the bus that wanted to go to other locations, and they were not allowed to do so,” Adams said. “They were forced on the bus with the understanding that they were going to other locations that they wanted to go to, and when they tried to explain they were not allowed to do so.”
