On Wednesday, a visiting delegation from the United States said the U.S. is standing in its commitment to Taiwan as Russia continues to invade Ukraine.
“The United States stands firmly behind its commitments to Taiwan, a visiting U.S. delegation said on Wednesday, as Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen vowed to work more closely with allies in response to what she called China’s growing military threat,” Reuters reported.
President Joe Biden reportedly sent the group of former U.S. leading security and defense authorities. The delegation is visiting Taiwan as Russia continues to attack Ukraine and the world watches to see what actions China might take against the island nation.
CNN reported, “In comments Wednesday, after meeting with the US delegation, Tsai said Taiwan would set up a donation account for Ukraine and that she, Su, and Vice President William Lai would each donate a month’s salary.”
Reuters added, “Collaboration between the United States and Taiwan is stronger and more expansive than ever before, said former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, who is leading the delegation.”
In a live broadcast gathering, Mullen told Tsai, “The United States will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo and will continue to support a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, consistent with the wishes and best interests of the people of Taiwan.”
“I do hope by being here with you, we can reassure you and your people, as well as our allies and partners in the region, that the United States stands firm behind its commitments,” Mullen added.
“We come to Taiwan at a very difficult and critical moment in world history. As (US) President (Joe) Biden has said, democracy is facing sustained and alarming challenges, most recently in Ukraine. Now more than ever, democracy needs champions,” Mullen noted.
China has claimed control over Taiwan, while Taiwan has said it will defend itself if it comes under attack.
“China’s military threat to the Taiwan Strait and to the region continues to rise,” Tsai told the U.S. delegation.
“We look forward to working even more closely with the U.S. and other stakeholders in the region, collectively responding to challenges and unilateral actions that could impact security, in order to maintain regional peace and stability,” she said.
She said the visit from the United States during the ongoing crisis in Ukraine showed the “rock-solid” connection between Taiwan and the United States and demonstrated the island’s part in regional and worldwide security.
As The Daily Wire reported last week, “Taiwan scrambled its air force Thursday after reporting Chinese aircraft in its airspace.”
“The reported move by China comes as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the former Soviet state of Ukraine over the warnings of severe sanctions by the West. The ‘provocative military action,’ as one U.S. Defense official called it, comes as concerns grow that China may invade Taiwan,” The Daily Wire noted.
The reported action by China “is not unusual,” a U.S. Defense official told Fox News on Thursday. “China has done this in the past a couple months ago, had similar type of events regularly.”
“China’s last excursion into Taiwanese airspace happened on January 23 when 39 Chinese aircraft flew through Taiwan defense space. On Thursday, Taiwan reported that nine Chinese aircraft flew into the island nation’s airspace,” The Daily Wire noted.
The U.S. remains “concerned” by “provocative military action near Taiwan,” the U.S. official continued. “The United States will continue to support a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, consistent with the wishes and best interests of the people on Taiwan,” the official said.
