The British Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday apologized after it aired a phony radio interview with Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.
“In our Newshour radio program on Friday, a man claiming to be Senator Cory Booker was interviewed in what appears to be a deliberate hoax,” the BBC wrote in a post it called a correction and apology. “We have apologized to Senator Booker and are looking into what went wrong to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
The interview only aired during the 3 p.m. EST last Friday.
The BBC did not indicate how it became aware it had been duped or why it took so long after the broadcast.
Hoaxsters sometimes sneak onto news shows from time to time — last December Fox News host Maria Bartiromo was punked by an animal rights activist posing as the CEO of a food-processing company.
The person posing as Booker on the BBC was discussing U.S. relations with Syria one day after President Joe Biden ordered an airstrike on the country to target Iranian-backed militias.
