President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet virtually with Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador Monday afternoon about immigration, reports Fox News.
Biden has started to roll back hardline immigration policies implemented by former President Donald Trump and two weeks ago unveiled sweeping immigration legislation that included a proposal for a path to citizenship for roughly 11 million migrants living without legal status in the U.S.
The bill also includes a shorter process to legal status for agriculture workers and recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Lopez Obrador is expected to talk to Biden about a “Bracero”-style labor program that would allow Mexicans to temporarily live in the U.S.
He will also ask Biden to share part of the U.S.’ COVID-19 vaccine supply, reports Reuters.
“What we are after is [to] maintain a relationship of cooperation and friendship – a policy of good neighborliness,” Lopez Obrador said during a news conference Monday. “Therefore, the topics [of the meeting] are COVID, that’s important to us, and above all else, the vaccine.”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday said the United States will work with Central American countries “to address the heartbreaking reasons why people are risking their lives and safety to make it into the United States at any cost.
“It’s dangerous for them,” he said, “and it goes against our laws.”
