Amid the wave of illegal immigration and unaccompanied migrant children flooding the U.S. southern border, Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis rebuked the Biden administration’s open border policies.
“Biden is going in the absolute wrong direction,” DeSantis told Fox News’ “Justice w/ Judge Jeanine” on Saturday night. “Trump had it right at the border. Biden’s got it wrong.”
President Joe Biden is “intentionally” pushing “ideological” changes in policy, particularly on immigration from the Trump administration and getting awful early results, DeSantis told host Jeanine Pirro.
“Obviously, it’s a disastrous change in policy,” DeSantis said. “Donald Trump had the wall, which we all supported, but also safe third-party agreements, as well as ‘Remain in Mexico.’ And guess what happened? The border was under control. So they’ve gone back on those policies, and they’ve created this crisis.
“It’s a disastrous way to start an administration. I think most of the American people are going to be strongly opposed to this.”
DeSantis also railed on the Democrat-led Congress pushing through Biden’s $1.9 trillion spending deal, which “stinks to high heaven,” because it rewards bad public policy amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
“So what this bill does is it says if you locked down, if you destroyed your state, if you destroyed your economy and you failed to stop COVID as well, you’re going to get a windfall,” DeSantis said. “So some of these lockdown states are getting an extra billion, $2 billion, $3 billion. So it’s effectively a transfer of money from states like Florida and Georgia to states like New York, Illinois and California.”
Gov. DeSantis has been hailed as a 2024 presidential candidate, if not a potential running mate for another campaign by Trump.
His immigration and pandemic policies have worked a lot better than Biden’s, he said.
“We just tried to look at the whole society,” DeSantis said. “We wanted to look out for everybody. We viewed this as a virus that was particularly dangerous for elderly people but not as dangerous for younger people. So we did the opposite on nursing homes. We banned hospitals from sending infected patients into nursing homes. We also did things like prioritize our seniors for vaccinations.
“But we had kids in school. It’s very important that they have the opportunity to go to school in person. We also saved the economy from collapse. Our unemployment rate right now is 4.9 percent. So we did all those things. Even with one of the most elderly populations in the country, our per capita COVID mortality is less than the national average and far less than lockdown states like New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.”
