Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., says local governments should get back to the basics of spending taxpayer money properly so the federal government wouldn’t have to step in to fund major projects like President Joe Biden’s proposed $2 trillion infrastructure bill.

“Instead, we see governments, like our local city and state governments, have spent money on all sorts of other things, created unnecessary programs, have just wasted and squandered the people’s money, and now are desperate for infrastructure investment, an injection from the federal government,” Malliotakis said Wednesday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.”

“That is the reality. This is the thing the government should be doing with your money to begin with. Why wasn’t it being done at the city level, at the state level, instead of doing all sorts of things that Mayor [Bill] de Blasio, Gov. [ Andrew] Cuomo like to spend money on?”

Biden on Wednesday unveiled his massive infrastructure plan, touting it as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity.

Putting infrastructure at the centerpiece of the president’s economic agenda, it calls for the injection of $620 billion into transport, including upgrading 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) of roads, repairing thousands of bridges and doubling funding for public transport.

The cost would be partly covered by raising corporate tax from 21 percent to 28 percent.

Critics on both sides of the aisle slammed the proposal, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell adamantly proclaiming that the plan is nothing more than fodder for a major tax increase.

“It’s like a Trojan horse,” McConnell told reporters. “It’s called infrastructure, but inside the Trojan horse it’s going to be more borrowed money, and massive tax increases on all the productive parts of our economy.”

Malliotakis said local governments should get “back to the basics” and spend taxpayer money properly.

“They want to get rid of the cops and they want you to actually insert yourself in a violent and dangerous situation,” she said.

“We cannot replace the police, and that is what they’re trying to do. So when it comes to public safety, border security, transportation, education, these are the areas where local and state governments should be focusing on instead of cutting back in those areas and spending money on all sorts of other crap.”
