A man struck an NYPD detective over the head on Monday with a plastic stick as the detective was investigating another crime. According to a video in a Twitter post from the New York City Police Department Detectives Endowment Association (DEA), the event happened in broad daylight.

The post read with a sarcastic tone, “Welcome to NYC! Even as our Detectives investigate crimes they’re attacked by emboldened criminals, who have quickly realized there are no consequences for law breakers in our city. The DEA is calling for this violence to be fully prosecuted as we look to file civil charges.”

Footage showed a police officer standing next to a shop front at what appeared to be a crime scene as he was approached and struck by a Black man wielding a plastic stick. The assailant struck the police officer with the stick. Then someone shouted, “What happened?”

The attacker then moved away, still eyeing the police officer. A group of officers then exited the crime scene seeing their fellow officer bending over then glancing up at the assailant, who was still standing at the sidewalk’s edge looking at the officers.

Police have since apprehended the suspect identifying him as Akeele Morgan, 25, of the Bronx. According to the New York Post, he was arrested near the scene at 39th Avenue, near Prince Street.

Morgan has been charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. The detective suffered a gash to his head.

No known motive has been provided for the attack.

DEA president Paul DiGiacomo had the following to say in a statement, “Once again, New Yorkers witness just how emboldened violent criminals are…If there’s anyone wondering why this happened, they can ask their elected officials who have created a city of no consequence for criminality.”
