House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fined three Republicans in the lower chamber Tuesday for defying her rules that require face masks on the House floor in contradiction to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that stipulates otherwise.

Reps. Brian Mast of Florida, Beth Van Duyne of Texas, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa were each slapped with $500 fines after they ignored warnings from prior mask violations, according to the Hill, and participated in a maskless demonstration in the chamber.

“The truth is, from this moment on, Americans must ignore lies and start to listen to scientists,” Mast said in a statement. “The scientists at the CDC are telling us if you are fully vaccinated, you can go about your life without wearing a mask or physically distancing.”

Pelosi has refused to relax House guidelines despite the CDC’s updated recommendations last week stating face masks and distancing are unnecessary for those fully vaccinated from COVID-19.

Seven other Republican lawmakers who participated in Tuesday’s maskless protest were hit with warnings, including Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Bob Good of Virginia, Mary Miller of Illinois, and Texas Reps. Chip Roy and Louie Gohmert. A second violation will give them the first $500 fine and a third will cost them $2,500.

The demonstration and ensuing fines came days after 34 House Republicans signed a letter spearheaded by Ohio Rep. Bob Gibbs demanding Pelosi return chamber rules to pre-pandemic procedures and eliminate the mask requirement pursuant to the latest CDC guidelines.
