Increasing taxes on the middle class will hurt the economy and “lead to a recession,” and Republicans have a duty to stop President Joe Biden’s multi-trillion-dollar spending plans, Rep. Madison Cawthorn said Tuesday.
“We have a $4 trillion budget and then we also have this $6 trillion spending plan,” the North Carolina Republican said on Fox Business’ “Mornings With Maria.” “That’s $10 trillion. Money doesn’t grow on trees, as you well know, and increasing taxes on the middle class is just going to hurt our economy more. This is going to lead to a recession, I genuinely believe.”
He added that the party has to hope that Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., keeps holding the line against other Democrats’ call to end the filibuster so that Republicans can keep fighting back.
“I am happy that Democrats have finally admitted that there is not unlimited money out there in the world,” said Cawthorn.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he doesn’t expect that any Republican senators will back Biden’s spending plans. Cawthorn also rejected Biden’s claims that “trickle-down economics” does not work.
“It’s just more of the same from the Biden administration,” said Cawthorn. “You know, they just say big lies and they continue to go along with the radical policies.”
Increased taxes on capital gains and income tax, will hurt the middle class and the economy, he continued, and “will take jobs away from the people who he purports to help, the working-class men and women.”
Meanwhile, Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited an elementary school in Virginia Monday, where students didn’t hold anything back about their opinions about remote learning, including that sometimes they find learning by computer to be hard and admitting that sometimes they need a nap.
“Continuing to sit on Zoom every single day is soul-crushing,” said Cawthorn. “Once I get through the tenth Zoom of my day, you sit there and you want to see someone face-to-face.”
The nation’s schoolchildren are the future of the country, he continued, adding that if they are not “actively involved in courses and study, then we’re going to continue to have more shortfalls when it comes to STEMS, science, technology, and engineering and that’s going to hurt our country even more.”
Cawthorn added that there must be a focus on education, “not trying to slam critical race theory in their face” or continuing to have classes remotely.
“The science tells us every single time that children are not at high risk of spreading COVID-19 or having serious side effects,” said Cawthorn. “We need to open up our schools. We need to get our children back to learning. And we need to have more options for our children when it comes to learning.”
Biden, he continued, “purports to help students, but in the end, he actually helps the special interest group of teacher unions that want to continue to have power and more money coming to them. This is the reason we’ve seen 6% of the COVID-19 bills that were going to help COVID-19, not actually help the students who needed it.”
