President Joe Biden is being like “an irresponsible person who got their first credit card” with his call for a multitrillion infrastructure spending plan, and it likely won’t get bipartisan support, Rep. Scott Perry said Wednesday.
“Be careful assuming it’s going to have bipartisan support,” the Pennsylvania Republican said on Fox Business’ “Mornings With Maria,” before Biden headed to Pittsburgh to announce the plans Wednesday afternoon. “(The plan) is serenity now and insanity later … the last time we tried this, it did not come out with bipartisan support. It was completely party line. You can’t just say infrastructure and then make it the ‘Green New Deal’ and act like we’re not going to figure it out. We might have been born at night, but it wasn’t last night.”
White House officials say the spending over eight years would generate millions of new jobs, at a time when the country would be making the shift from fossil fuels and combats the perils of climate change.
But the price tag, and the taxes needed to pay for a $2 trillion plan, are sparking strong protests among Republicans who say that the bill is more of a focus on the left-wing Green New Deal than a traditional infrastructure bill that focuses on bridges and highways.
“This about making an investment in America — not just modernizing our roads or railways or bridges but building an infrastructure of the future,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has commented about the plan.
“Even rolling back the Trump tax cuts aren’t going to be nearly enough to pay for it,” said Perry. “They’re going to pump the brakes, they’re going to slam the brakes on the great Trump economy that keeps rolling along and drive it to a screeching halt as we are forced to move supply chains further into China and forced to buy slave labor made products that are not proven to be effective over the long term.”
Further, the infrastructure bill will cause insecurity with the nation’s power grid system, said Perry.
“We saw what happened in Texas with the blackouts,” said Perry. “We’re all going to be forced to plug in (for our vehicles) and there will be nothing from the grid to power it. That’s where we’re headed right now.”
Perry also predicted that Democrats will be “fractured” over the proposal, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “is going to get them in line.”
“This is about paying off political friends and beating your opponents into submission,” said Perry. “I don’t know if anybody’s not been keeping score lately but Speaker Pelosi is really good at that. I expect she’s going to get the votes in the House.”
But in the Senate, there will be another story, particularly given the influence of Sen Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.
Manchin’s state and its people are “heavily reliant” on what it takes to create energy, but under Biden’s plan, “we’re going to be paying China to do it and at the same time constricting our own ability to provide for our own consumers,” said Perry.
Meanwhile, someone will need to pay for the package and “all this stuff that we’re probably never going to use,” said Perry. “This Biden administration continues to govern against the will of the people. This is just more of the same thing.”
Meanwhile, Biden is also planning to propose, separately, a series of soft infrastructure plans for child care, family tax credits, and more, for another $2 trillion in spending, bringing the overall price tag to $3 trillion to $4 trillion, a figure that Perry said can’t be funded through tax cut rollbacks.
“My understanding is that he is committed to $1 trillion of the $3 to $4 trillion by rolling back the Trump tax cuts, so you can do the math,” said Perry. “This is forcing the American people to pay for something that they haven’t asked for, that they don’t want and is not ready for primetime.”
