Rep. Greg Steube of Florida criticized Democrats for their so-called Equality Act, accusing them of wanting to avoid any discussion of God in a debate about a bill that very likely will impact those who practice a religious faith.

The second-term Republican, who represents the Sunshine State’s 17th Congressional District on the south central Gulf Coast, illustrated his claim by an exchange he had with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who said “what any religious tradition describes as God’s will is no concern of this Congress.”

“Obviously this nation was built on Judeo-Christian principles, and to be able to bring in Biblical principles in the debate of the laws our country, and the Democrats don’t think it should be part of our debate here in Washington,” Steube said Wednesday on Newsmax TV’s “The Chris Salcedo Show.”

Nadler’s comment came on Feb. 25 on the floor of the House after Steube spoke out against the “Equality Act,” which would essentially negate the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act and also prohibit anyone from claiming religious liberty for acts considered by the government as discriminatory, such as a baker refusing to make a cake for gay wedding.

The bill passed the House on a virtual party line vote but needs 60 votes in the Senate to overcome an expected Republican filibuster.

Steube quoted the 22nd chapter of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, which says women shall not dress as men and vice versa, “for anyone who does such things is an abomination to the Lord, your God.”

“Jerry Nadler criticized me when I started using a Bible verse on the floor to illustrate that if our laws are in subjugation and against God and what he says what we’re supposed to be doing, then he’s going to reject our nation. Jerry Nadler’s response to that was God’s will, and his term religious tradition, it’s not religious tradition, it’s the word of God, in his term God’s will has no business in this congress.

“Which I thought was interesting as I was standing there debating and I look up above the Speaker’s rostrum it says ‘In God We Trust.’”
