Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who is leading a Congressional team to tour border sites in Texas, said Thursday he doesn’t know how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., can praise President Joe Biden’s actions on immigration when the situation is “beyond a disaster.”

“I don’t know how she could even say that with any credibility,” Scalise said on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” while responding to Pelosi’s comments that the United States is on a “good path at the border” under Biden after it was a “very bad situation under the Trump administration.”

“Joe Biden created this crisis, but the child abuse and neglect that’s going on, it’s not just the 20-plus day treks that some of these young kids are taking, over a third of the girls are being sexually assaulted or raped along the journey,” Scalise said. “Then they get to the United States, and you see how they are being treated, not given proper food and shelter, and being put next to somebody six inches apart with COVID.”

He added that Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been tasked with heading the diplomatic efforts concerning the border, “doesn’t want to have this dumped in her lap, because Joe Biden created a mess and is asking her to mop it up, or else she’s in over her head.”

Either way, the situation does not bode well for the United States, Scalise said.

“Our allies around the world, surely Mexico, worked with President [Donald] Trump to come up with a good plan to remain in Mexico policy, but think about this too,” he said. “You’ve got now at least six people on the terrorist watch list that have been caught. They won’t tell us how many more. No doubt there are many more that have come across our border that aren’t from central and South America.”

Instead, they are from Middle Eastern countries, “where they have people on the terrorist watch list hat know there’s a porous southern border,” Scalise said. “If you want to come and do harm in America, it’s free reign, it’s open season.”

This is a dangerous situation not only for the United States but for “these kids that President Biden’s policies that have encouraged to come across and make the trek and get sexually assaulted along the way,” he continued.

There is bipartisan interest in solving the crisis, however, the minority whip said.

“You see [Rep.] Henry Cuellar, a Democrat as well as others that are expressing outrage with President Biden’s decision to create this,” he said. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. The remain in Mexico policy was working maybe just because Donald Trump came up with it, Joe Biden can call it his own idea, and then redo what President Trump did that was working with Mexico.”

Scalise said that under Trump, Mexico was not only defending the United States’ southern border, but its own southern boundaries and stopping the flow of migrants.

“They are taking over military bases, the Dallas Convention Center, all of them are getting overrun, and the people on the ground are telling you they can’t control it,” Scalise said. “It has got to stop. Joe Biden needs to reverse this deadly devastating policy.”
