South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham dismissed calls for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign over claim of inappropriate behavior with women, suggesting the accusations be heard in a legal setting and allow Cuomo to defend himself.
“Rather than jumping to the conclusion that he should resign, I think what should happen is there should be a process, where the people who make the accusations can be heard, and he can defend himself,” Graham said Monday night on Fox News. “I think that’s the best thing for the people of New York, and the best thing for the country.”
Three women, including two former New York state government employees, have accused the 63-year-old Democrat of making remarks that made them uncomfortable. A third accuser added her voice about the governor’s approach to her at a wedding reception that also included a photograph.
The claims have resulted in several calls for his resignation, most notably among Democrats and especially Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y.
“The Democratic Party is now piling on Andrew Cuomo because he’s made a lot of enemies along the way,” Graham added.
However, he also accused some Democrats of hypocrisy, notably Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who he said blamed Republicans for “supporting sexual assault” during the hearings to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, but being conspicuously silent on Cuomo.
On Tuesday, Schumer called the allegations against Cuomo as “serious, very troubling.”
