Sixty-eight percent of Americans want Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, according to a new TIPP poll.
The online survey asked the question: “President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and President Biden’s brother, James Biden, are allegedly under federal investigation for tax and financial matters. Do you agree or disagree that Attorney General Merrick Garland should appoint a special counsel to manage their cases independently of the Biden administration?”
Here are the results, released Tuesday
- 42% agreed strongly.
- 26% agreed somewhat.
- 7% disagreed somewhat.
- 6% disagreed strongly.
- 18% were uncertain.
The poll also found:
- 85% of Republicans support the appointment of a special counsel.
- 65% of Democrats want one.
- 66% of independents also want a special counsel.
The poll, conducted March 31-April 3 surveyed 1,436 people. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
Bill Barr, as he stepped down as attorney general said in December he saw “no reason” to appoint a special counsel to oversee the tax investigation into Hunter Biden..
Barr said the investigation into Hunter Biden’s financial dealings was “being handled responsibly and professionally.”
“I have not seen a reason to appoint a special counsel and I have no plan to do so before I leave,” he said.
Hunter Biden had confirmed in December he was under tax investigation.
“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” he said in a statement. “I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisers.”
The Washington Post said the probe began in 2018.
A person familiar with the case said that the probe continued during the 2020 election year but that investigators took special care not to take overt steps as voting neared that would have made it more widely known.
The Post noted that Hunter Biden’s foreign business affairs have long dogged his father’s recent political life, as Republicans have alleged they presented conflicts of interest for the president.
Then-President Donald Trump had even invited Tony Bobulinski, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, to attend the final presidential debate.
The Washington Post reported that Bobulinski alleged that in May 2017 he met with Joe Biden and his son, as well as Joe Biden’s brother Jim to discuss a joint venture with the Chinese energy firm CEFC.
The newspaper said Bobulinski appeared to be disputing Joe Biden’s claim that he had never discussed foreign business dealings with his son.
