Arizona has signed a new law that would prohibit federal gun laws that would violate the Second Amendment.
The HB2111 legislation was signed into law Tuesday by Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, ensuring rights of gun owners are protected from potential overreaching gun laws sought by President Joe Biden’s administration.
The law seeks to prohibit police and sheriffs from enforcing new federal gun laws, which critics say will undermine the rule of law and discourage law enforcement officers from enforcing federal gun laws to protect the public. Critics also say it is an unconstitutional measure that will cost taxpayers to defend in court.

“The state of Arizona and its political subdivisions are prohibited from utilizing any financial resources or state personnel to administer, cooperate with, or enforce any law, act, order, rule, treaty or regulation of the federal government that is inconsistent with any law of this state regarding the regulation of firearms,” the text of the law reads.
President Biden has talked of banning certain firearms and magazines after a pair of mass murders last month.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., plans to take up two House Democrat-passed bills expanding background checks.
President Biden is expected to start rolling out executive actions regulating guns amid pressure to act from longtime advocates, including stopping the proliferation of so-called ghost guns, according to administration officials.
Currently people can buy kits that contain the components and directions to put together firearms in as little as 30 minutes, one of the officials said, and use them to commit crimes. The weapons, known as ghost guns, cannot be traced by law enforcement because they do not have serial numbers.
Biden’s action Thursday will tell the Justice Department, within 60 days, to issue a proposed rule making clear that when a stabilizing brace is used to effectively turn a pistol into a short-barreled rifle, it is subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act.
Biden also will announce that he is allocating funds for community violence intervention and prevention programs. Such programs have been established in urban communities with the goal of heading off conflicts that can lead to violence and helping people at risk of committing offenses. Biden has proposed $5 billion over 8 years for community intervention funding as part of his American Jobs Plan.
The president plans to nominate David Chipman, a gun control advocate, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to the White House.
Chipman is a senior policy adviser at Giffords, an organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who was gravely wounded injured in a 2011 shooting near Tucson that killed six other people, including a federal judge. The group focuses on tightening gun control measures.
