The U.S. Secretary of Education is preparing to launch investigations on states that are banning mask mandates. During an interview on Sunday, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said the Office for Civil Rights would be investigating claims to ensure students keep their rights.
“The Department has the authority to investigate any state educational agency whose policies or actions may infringe on the rights of every student to access public education equally,” said Cardona. He added states banning mask mandates are “needlessly placing students, families and educators at risk.”
Florida and Texas are just two of several states that have implemented bans on enforcing masks in schools. Cardona added school districts who defy governor bans on masks would receive federal funding.
This comes as Joe Biden asked Cardona to “access all available tools” that can be used against states going against public health measures.
To local leaders and educators facing repercussions for protecting the health and safety of students and school communities: we stand with you, and we’re ready to assist.https://t.co/Y35rNCP6Mj pic.twitter.com/zkQPAMHDU3
