The White House has provided limited solutions to the newest COVID variant. Instead, Joe Biden repeated one of his popular campaign slogans by warning Americans that a “very long, dark winter” is ahead of them.
During a meeting with his COVID-19 response team, Biden trumpeted his administration’s accomplishments against the virus while warning the public of the dangers posed by the Omicron variant. However, some of his comments contradicted available data. First, Biden announced the arrival imminent spread of the new variant in the United States.
“I want to send a direct message to the American people,” he stated. “Due to the steps we’ve taken, Omicron has not yet spread as fast as it would have otherwise done and as happened in Europe. But it’s here now and it’s spreading, and it’s going to increase.”
While there’s no information showing any Biden administration policies have curbed Omicron, it’s more contagious than previous incarnations of COVID-19. A recent study estimated Omicron to be approximately 70 times more transmissible than the Delta variant.
However, data from South Africa showed Omicron cases to be far milder than that of other strains. Despite this, Biden continued by suggesting Omicron would ravage the unvaccinated and that vaccines as well as boosters are the only line of defense.
“For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death for unvaccinated,” he asserted. “For themselves, their families and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. But there’s good news: if you’re vaccinated and you had your booster shot, you’re protected from severe illness and death, period.”
A study from Columbia University found current vaccines and booster shots to be relatively ineffective against Omicron. Furthermore, the United Kingdom is the only country to have suffered an Omicron fatality with only one death having been recorded as a result of the new variant.
However, it seems all the Biden administration can offer the American people for Christmas is more boosters and possible restrictions for the unvaccinated.
