One of world history’s most famous transgender women Caitlyn Jenner has come out against trans girls competing in girls sports, calling it unfair to biological girls.

“This is a question of fairness, that’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girl’s sports in school,” Jenner told TMZ on Saturday, amid a campaign for governor in California. “It just isn’t fair, and we have to protect girls sports in our schools.”

Jenner, a registered Republican, cut the impromptu interview short and climbed into her vehicle when asked if restricting trans girls from competing in girls sports was “delegitimizing their identity.”

“Have a good day,” she said.

Jenner tweeted the video with a clarification later Saturday:

“I didn’t expect to get asked this on my Saturday morning coffee run, but I’m clear about where I stand. It’s an issue of fairness and we need to protect girls’ sports in our schools.”

The position echoes that of former President Donald Trump and runs in opposition to many Democrats supporting transgenders’ participation in sports that match their gender identity.

Jenner, 71, is pushing to succeed Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom in California. She was once Bruce Jenner, an American Olympic track-and-field icon who won gold in the 1976 Olympics with a then-record score.

She transitioned in 2015, becoming a face of the transgender movement.

Multiple states, including Florida and West Virginia, are moving to pass legislation banning transgender girls in girls sports.

It was Jenner’s first comment on the controversial issue since announcing her candidacy to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in a recall election. Five states have passed laws or implemented executive orders this year limiting the ability of transgender youths to play sports or receive certain medical treatment. There has been a vehement outcry from supporters of transgender rights.

Jenner supported Trump in the 2016 presidential election but later criticized his administration for some discriminatory actions against transgender people. Many transgender-rights advocates have criticized Jenner, saying she has failed to convince them that she is a major asset to their cause.
