The Pentagon said it remains committed to building its relationship with Taiwan. During a press briefing Tuesday, Department of Defense spokesperson John Kirby affirmed America’s relationship with the autonomous island nation is “rock solid.”
Over the past two weeks, the Biden administration’s commitment to Taiwan has been tested as China launched a barrage of incursions into Taiwanese airspace. Kirby stressed, America and Taiwan are continuing their diplomatic and military exchanges, but failed to comment on whether he recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign state.
“We act in accordance with the One-China policy and we’ve long abided by that policy, and it’s distinct from Beijing’s One-China principle under which the Chinese Communist Party asserts sovereignty over Taiwan,” explained the DOD representative. “We take no position over the sovereignty of Taiwan, on sovereignty over Taiwan. We will continue to support a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues consistent with the wishes and best interests of the people of Taiwan.”
