Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has teased a presidential run, and America is cheering. A recent Newsweek poll found that almost 50% of respondents wanted to see the former WWE wrestling star become president and, in response, Johnson said he would be “honored” to serve the country.
“Humbling,” he wrote of the poll’s results in an Instagram post. “I don’t think our Founding Fathers EVER envisioned a 6-4, bald, tattooed, half-Black, half-Samoan, tequila drinking, pick-up truck driving, fanny pack-wearing guy joining their club — but if it ever happens it’d be my honor to serve you, the people.”
Johnson has spoken before about running for president. In an interview with GQ, the actor admitted he had not ruled out politics for his future.
“I can’t deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring. And beyond that, it would be an opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives on a global scale. But there are a lot of other things I want to do first,” he said.
In a separate interview with the outlet, he even shared what he would do as president.
“With any job you come into, you’ve got to prove yourself,” Johnson said. “Personally, I feel that if I were president, poise would be important. Leadership would be important. Taking responsibility for everybody. [If I didn’t agree with someone] on something, I wouldn’t shut them out. I would actually include them. The first thing we’d do is we’d come and sit down and we’d talk about it. It’s hard to categorize right now how I think he’s doing, other than to tell you how I would operate, what I would like to see.”
The interview suddenly had Americans thinking of what it would be like to have Johnson as their president. In a column for The Washington Post, Alyssa Rosenberg wrote that “Johnson could be the sort of person the GOP tries to renovate into a viable candidate.”
Although Johnson’s political stance is ambiguous, Rosenberg noted that Johnson is “registered as a Republican and has appeared at the Republican convention to boost voter registration.”
Soon after the report, the prospect of having the “Fast & The Furious” star as president gained traction. Johnson spoke about the idea with USA Today in 2017.
“So I can tell you with all honesty that the consideration comes at the desire from a large amount of people who would like to see this happen,” he said. “But I mean, honestly, there are so many different variables that have to come into play when you think about this. Politics is not my business. So the consideration is there. And we’ll just have to see. I’ll continue to watch and learn as much as I can.”
