The hearing comes as schools across the country have been trying to safely return to in-person learning. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) grilled Cardona about parental rights in this process.
Braun: “Do you think parents should be in charge of their child’s education as the primary stakeholder?
Cardona: I believe parents are important stakeholders, but I also believe educators have a role in determining educational programming.”
Braun: “I think that’s going to be a little out of focus what I think you’re going to find across all elements of education since they pay the bills, they raise the kids.”
Braun went on to add parents should be the drivers of their own kid’s education.
