The FBI released its annual crime report, which showed murders rose sharply across the country in 2020 in the largest single year increase since the agency started keeping track in the 1960’s. According to the new data, the homicide rate jumped nearly 30 percent in 2020 from the previous year.

The latest figures have shown homicides began to escalate last year during the summer months, while peaking in June and July. The rate remained high in the following months.

Although the FBI has collected figures every year from law enforcement agencies across the country, law enforcement have never been required to participate. Fewer than 10,000 agencies reported to the collection system referred to as NIRBS, which has faced the FBI with difficulty in collecting and reporting quality data.

Many have argued the rise in crime stemmed from Democrats’ push to defund the police.
