Former acting Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Mark Morgan has blasted Kamala Harris’s border visit as all show and no substance. In interviews on Friday, Morgan said Harris’s visit was driven by optics and argued she failed to visit an area of the border where the crisis has been at its worst.

Instead of El Paso, Morgan said she should have gone to the epicenter of the crisis in the Rio Grande Valley if she truly wanted a meaningful understanding of what has been going on. Morgan added the move was to turn anger over the border off of Joe Biden and onto Harris.

“I think this was done by intention, by the President to really distance himself,” he explained. “If you look, as soon as Vice President Harris was named czar, her staff tried to distance herself from the southwest border crisis to say she was just there to develop root causes.”

After being appointed as the nation’s border czar, Harris repeatedly ignored calls from lawmakers to make a trip to witness the crisis first-hand. For this reason, she has also been accused of only making her appearance in El Paso due to President Trump’s recently announced plans to visit the southern border with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas).

Morgan went on to say Harris will ultimately refuse to take responsibility for the crisis or take a single action to address it. A recent Harvard-Harris poll found two-thirds of voters say border crossers should be returned to Mexico in a return to a Trump-era policy dismantled by Biden.
