Hundreds gathered at the Barclays Center in New York City to protest vaccine mandates.
On Sunday, just ahead of the Brooklyn Nets basketball team’s home opener protesters came together. Demonstrators called for the NBA to allow Nets’ point-guard, Kyrie Irving, to play as they chanted “stand with Kyrie” and “no vaccine mandate.”
Earlier in the month, the team’s manager banned Irving from playing with the team until he receives a COVID-19 vaccine. In response, Irving said he was choosing to stay unvaccinated because it’s his choice and he’s trying to be a voice for the voiceless.
The Barclays Center was temporarily placed on lockdown due to the protest.
“Barclays Center briefly closed its doors today in order to clear protestors from the main doors on the plaza and ensure guests could safely enter the area,” read a statement provided by a spokesperson for Barclays Center. “Only ticketed guests were able to enter the building and the game proceeded according to schedule.”
