Hunter Biden, during a late-night appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” continued to insist that he doesn’t know if a laptop at the center of news reports coming out just before his father’s presidential election was his and called the whole matter a “red herring” and aimed blame for the scandal on Rudy Giuliani.
“Now look, I really don’t know and the fact of the matter is, it’s a red herring,” Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, told show host Jimmy Kimmel during an appearance to publicize his memoir, “Beautiful Things.” “It is absolutely a red herring. But I am absolutely, I think, within my rights to question anything that comes from the desk of Rudy Giuliani. And so I don’t know is the answer.”
During the last months of the election, The New York Post reported on emails showing that there was evidence of a meeting between Joe Biden, who was at the time vice-president, Hunter Biden, and a top executive from Burisma, the Ukrainian energy firm that had hired the younger Biden. Joe Biden has denied that the meeting took place.
The Post said it got the copy of the laptop’s hard drive from Rudy Giuliani, who was a lawyer for then-President Donald Trump. Giuliani said he got the hard drive from a repair shop where the laptop had been taken.
Kimmel joked with Biden about the laptop, asking him if he wishes he got AppleCare to have the computer, a MacBook Pro, repaired.
“I’ve seen you on some interviews, you know, talking about the laptop … and when they asked you if that was your laptop, you say you don’t know, which is hard to believe unless you read the book,” Kimmel said while referring to Biden’s battle with drug addiction, which he describes in detail in the memoir. “And then it’s like, I’m surprised you have shoes on.”
Kimmel also asked Biden, 51, about his ties to Burisma, reading an excerpt from the book where the president’s son wrote “Did I make a mistake by taking a seat on the board of a Ukrainian gas company? No. Did I display a lack of judgment? No. Would I do it again? No.”
Biden told Kimmel that before he joined Burisma, he had served on “a dozen boards” for entities like Amtrak and World Food Program U.S., and cited his education at Yale University and his “expertise on corporate governance” along with his career as an attorney.
“However, what I didn’t take into account was the way in which they would use the perception against my dad,” Biden told Kimmell. “For that, I wouldn’t do it again for that reason.”
Biden also spoke out about Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., both of whom have criticized him and his father.
He called Graham’s criticism “sad,” considering the friendship the senator and his father had shared when the president was in the Senate.
“Politics has become so toxic,” he said, adding that he used to refer to his father’s former colleagues on either side of the aisle as “uncles.”
“I think that the thing that I hope my dad is able to bring back is his genuine desire to take some of that toxicity out again,” Biden said “So I had a deep respect for Senator Graham. And it’s just sad to see the way in which he has decided to, not just attack me, but to approach politics.”
He also called it “comical” when someone like Trump Jr. says the only reason he has been successful is because of his father’s name.
“It is wildly comical,” Biden agreed. “That is putting it lightly.”
He also joked, when Kimmel asked him if he has ever met the former president’s son, “Not that I know of,” he said. “But I’ve been in some pretty rough places.”
