An Illinois state trooper was killed after being shot on a local expressway. Authorities are still investigating the shooting, which happened at 1:45 p.m. local time on Friday, on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 43rd Street.

The Illinois State Police has not released any further information regarding the shooting, saying the investigation is still in its early stages. The fallen trooper has been identified by local reports as 35-year-old Gerald Mason.

The incident comes the same day the ISP doubled its troop presence on expressways amid an uptick of shootings. More than 185 shootings have been reported on Chicago expressways so far this year, which more than doubles last year’s count.

The investigation into the incident remains extremely active.
