Even as the Biden administration engages in diplomacy aimed at lifting crippling sanctions on Tehran to entice it to return to the nuclear deal, Iran has released a provocative video showing its military forces blowing up the U.S. Capitol building, The Washington Free Beacon has reported.
The video was shown on Iranian state television before the country’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei delivered comments in which he praised the nation’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its former leader Qassim Soleimani, who was killed in a drone strike by the U.S. last year.
“The Americans have been for years deeply saddened by the Islamic republic’s influence, and they were angry with General Soleimani for this reason and martyred him for this reason,” Khamenei said.
In addition to showing the blowing up of the U.S. Capitol, the video also depicts Iranian forces marching on Jerusalem, according to the Free Beacon.
Republicans critical of the Biden administration’s tactics in dealing with the Iranian regime said the video is a clear signal that Tehran will never moderate its anti-American and anti-Western rhetoric.
Sen. Pat Toomey wrote in a tweet that “Last week, Iran’s chief diplomat allegedly admitted the IRGC calls the shots in Tehran. Now, Iran releases a fake video of the IRGC blowing up our Capitol. The Biden [administration’s] priority should be ensuring Iran cannot carry out such an attack, not capitulating by removing sanctions.”
Toomey’s comments are bolstered by a recently leaked video of Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif admitting in a private conversation that Tehran will never find common ground with America or change its radical views, the Free Beacon reported.
“I believe Iran and the US will never be friends as long as the Islamic republic preserves its identity, Zarif said. “Never will our issues with America be resolved.”
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also recently declared that the US had lost its “economic war” against Tehran, saying that its sanctions are at the “brink of extermination,” Newsweek reported.
The US withdrew from the Obama-era deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, during the Trump administration.
After Trump withdrew from the deal, according to the New York Post, Iran began enriching uranium at ever higher levels.
Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Tehran had received economic benefits in exchange for cutting back on its nuclear program.
