Kathy Hochul has been sworn in as New York’s first female governor. Just after midnight Tuesday morning, the Democrat was sworn in during a private ceremony at the state’s capitol.
The Empire State’s 57th governor later held a public ceremony, where she said she wants people to believe in the state government again. This comes after former the former governor, Andrew Cuomo, left office in disgrace following the state attorney general’s report detailing his abuses of power.
Hochul vowed to deal with state lawmakers in a different way than her predecessor as the state continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We also talk about how we’ll be combating COVID, getting direct aid to New Yorkers more quickly and changing the culture of Albany,” she stated. “And that’s why I’m looking forward to a fresh, collaborative approach. That’s how I’ve always conducted myself and nothing new for me, but is something I’m planning on introducing to the state capital.”

The governor also declined to say if a special prosecutor should be appointed to look into Cuomo. Instead, Hochul said she would leave the matter to the state legislature.
