Left wing comedian Bill Maher called on his fellow liberals to starting loving America again. On HBO’s Real Time on Friday night, Maher said right wing Americans had the tendency to sometimes go overboard in their love of the country.

However, he pointed out the fundamentals of the U.S. were sound and needed to be upheld by all sides. In a direct rebuke of far-left activists and politicians claiming the U.S. was a home of oppression and tyranny, he said so many immigrants wanted to come to the U.S. because they have seen how free it is.

Maher said we are not the bad guys and those who think we are, need perspective.

“If you think is irredeemable, turn on the news or get a passport and a ticket on one of those sketchy airlines that puts its web address on the plane,” he stated. “There’s a reason Afghan mothers are handing their babies to us.”

Maher added that while the U.S. failed in its mission of ending oppression in Afghanistan, we have largely succeeded in that mission within the U.S. and that must be recognized.
