As the pace of vaccinations slows throughout the U.S., at least 22 states are not requesting their full coronavirus vaccine allotments for this week, a CBS News analysis released Monday shows.
CBS contacted health officials in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and 38 states responded, with only 16 of them saying they ordered all available vaccines.
Arkansas health officials said the reason the state did not order new vaccines for the week beginning Monday is it has enough for its current rate of inoculation. It is the only state to say so. South Carolina, meanwhile, supposedly only ordered doses of Johnson & Johnson and declined any more doses of Moderna or Pfizer.
Last month, White House press secretary Jen Psaki spoke about the slowing rate of vaccination, saying the U.S. would reach a point where supply outweighs demand, and the Biden administration was focusing on the concern.
We will “get to a point where we have greater supply than we have demand is because — only in some regions of the country, I should say, as you know, not everywhere — is because we work quickly to increase supply and provide thousands of easy and convenient locations for people to get vaccinated,” Psaki said.
