Police say the suspect repeatedly yelled at two victims passing by demanding one of them remove her face mask before assaulting her with a hammer.
The 31-year old victim, who did not want to be identified, told local media she tried to defend herself, but realized she was badly injured.
The victim needed seven stitches on her head and remains in stable condition. Meanwhile, the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest.
