The mayor of Oakland, California is pushing to reverse plans to defund the police amid a spike violent crimes in the city. On Monday, Mayor Libby Schaaf announced she’s working to stop plans to divert funding from the police and is seeking to hire more officers.
This announcement comes as the number of homicides in Oakland jumped to 127 after three people, including a retired police officer, were killed over the weekend. The Democrat mayor said she will ask the City Council to reverse millions of dollars in funding, which was set to go toward programs to prevent crimes.
“We will also be presenting an analysis to make the case to reverse the cuts that are planned for just eight-months from now,” Libby expalined. “That analysis will make the case that additional staffing is needed in the wake of this violence spree.”
Oakland is one one many liberal cities flip-flopping on plans to defund the police after seeing a rise in violent crimes and homicides.
