The leaders of Russia and China are bolstering relations amid mounting tensions with the West. Vladimir Putin met with Xi Jinping in Beijing Friday ahead of the Winter Olympics for their first in-person meeting in more than two years.
Moscow reported that it prepared more than 15 contracts and agreements for the visit. In televised remarks, Putin said he offered a new contract to supply natural gas to China by way of a new proposed pipeline.
Efforts to bolster the bilateral partnership come as Beijing closely eyes how NATO acts in the standoff at Ukraine’s border, possibly looking for an opportunity to pose its own aggression on Taiwan.
“Our oil producers prepared a very good solution on hydrocarbon supplies to China for our today’s meeting and we made another step forward in the gas sector,” Putin stated. “I mean the new deal to supply China with 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the Far East.”
