Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., tried to call attention to the surge at the southern border by unfurling a Mylar blanket – similar to those used by migrants in shelters – during President Joe Biden’s speech before Congress.
Boebert’s spokesperson confirmed she was attempting to put the spotlight on the recent surge at the border with Mexico.
“President Biden did not address or bring attention to the crisis at our southern border,” the spokesperson told The Hill. “ So Rep. Boebert did.”
And she backed up her action with a series of tweets on Wednesday night.
“Biden still hasn’t mentioned the crisis he created at our southern border,” she tweeted during his address.
In another tweet, she wrote: “The border is a war zone.”
And she said: “Biden’s solution to illegal immigration is amnesty and open borders. Disappointed but not surprised.”
Fox News noted her use of the Mylar blanket was misinterpreted by some members of the media.
Kasie Hunt of NBC News tweeted: @laurenboebert opened a Mylar blanket on the floor, crinkling and making noise at it opened. It was warmer than usual in the chamber when this speech started, but they have definitely cranked the AC since.’
The Washington Examiner noted Boebert covered herself with the blanket while she sat and listened to Biden’s speech.
The outlet pointed out that conservatives have criticized the president for his apparent unwillingness to refer to the surge at the border by migrants, including many unaccompanied minors.
The Examiner said Biden had briefly mentioned immigration in his Wednesday night speech, saying that we need to look at the “root” of the problem, which he said includes violence, corruption, and hunger in other countries.

In his speech, Biden did pitch ways to reduce the debt amid massive spending plans and vowed to tax the rich to help close America’s wealth gap.
“My fellow Americans, trickle down economics has never worked,” Biden said in his address to a joint session of Congress. “It’s time to grow the economy from the bottom and the middle out.”
Biden took a pointed shot at the Trump administration’s tax reform of 2017.
“Look, the big tax cut of 2017, remember, it was supposed to pay for itself,” Biden said. “That was how it was sold. And generate vast economic growth. Instead, it added $2 trillion to the deficit.”
In the Republican response to Biden’s address, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., rebuked the president’s divisive agenda on taxes, spending, and race.
