Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales (Texas) warned the border crisis was going to keep spiraling out of control. Speaking to NPR on Friday, the Texas lawmaker said over 250,000 illegal aliens have crossed at that point this year alone.

Gonzales added over 1.5 million have been allowed across at all points along the border and given court dates after being allowed entry into the U.S. When asked about why Texas has been enforcing the border on its own, the Republican said local officials have a right to keep their communities safe.

“Sadly, the Texas governor and Texas in general, it essentially feels like they’re on their own. You know, you see that at the local level, as well, with the mayors and the county judges and the sheriffs,” he explained. “They’re doing everything in their power to try to, you know, make their communities more safe.”

A fresh surge of migrants is expected to make its way through Mexico in the coming weeks.
